adding a user to be a local admin on a computer on the domain

I am trying to add a user that I created on a new domain to a computer on the domain as a local admin but I get an error that the domain doesn't exist or is available. Any idea why that would happen?

Could be a number of things, more than likely a DNS issues. Make sure the DNS Settings (in TCP/IP properties) on the computer is pointing to your DNS server for name resolution.

How do I know that my DNS settings are correct? What ip address do I use for the DNS server if I have DNS installed on the DC?

On your client workstation, the DNS Server should be set as the primary DNS server setting.

To view the configuration easily, you can run "ipconfig /all" from a cmd prompt on the workstation.

I checked this and the domain controller with the DNS is listed as the Primary DNS Suffix but I still can't add users from the domain to the workstation.

When you add the user do you use the format of
domain\username
?
It should then ask you for the domain administrator username and password.

In your TCP IP Settings (on the workstations), is the Primary DNS Servers IP address configured. Or dose it say obtain address...?
make sure the IP Address of you DNS Server is configured.

From a command prompt type in c:\NSLOOKUP
If DNS is configured properly, you should see something like this:
Default Server: YourDNSServerName.com
Address: 192.168.0.11 (some IP address).

I know this is not a professional suggestion but after you try what the folks above told you, and if it still doesn't work, just keep trying (maybe even reboot). I had errors adding users to my own domain because of trust error or whatever it was. Someone told me to keep trying and it eventually worked. Not sure what specific error you're getting though.

When I did the c:\NSLOOKUP I got an error that the server was a Unknown server but it did give me the ip address of the DNS server. Any idea why it would tell me that it is an unknown server?
