Adding a TCP/IP Printer in Win 98

How does one go about adding a TCP/IP printer in Win98?
I'v got a Xerox Workcenter 421 (Big office printer) that needs to be added to a user PC. The only way I know how is to get a server, add the printer, then share it to the 98 users. Problem: The server is being updated so I need to add the printer directly to the 98 users so they can use it. XP,NT,2000, all have TCP/IP printer options, 98 dosen't. How do I add the printer to the users 98se machines? -Marshall

If you look through the Xerox software there is usually software to install the printer as IP based on a 98 machine. I forget the name of it because its been awhile but I've done it plenty of times before.

You need to set up a new port on the user 's PC - TCP/IP and then add printer - local and then use the new tcp/ip port and put in the ip address of the printer.

Actually, I think the sequence is add printer, local, then when the printer is not found, Windows should give you the opportunity to add a new port. Been a while, but the trick is to add the printer as a local one.

The PC's are all networked so I would goto Add Printer - Local, and which type should I choose in local?
LPT1-3
Comm1-4
File
ECP Parrell Port

Anything working?
Wanna be of help, yet not certain of my ideas - and they're complicated....
Is the Server up yet?
See Forum581 for TCP/IP issues
or perhaps the Ethernet Forum586

Windows 98 does not have the ability to print directly to a TCP/IP printer like NT/2K/XP. Xerox should have included a driver with the printer that would give you the ability.

There used to be a program available called lprmonitor that would give you the ability to print directly to a TCP/IP port. I would suggest doing a google search.

Hope this helps!

If there is no TCP/IP port option on these machines, then you can download the TCP/IP port monitor from Xerox's website from your printer's download options under Utilites & Applications. Should also be on your CD if you have it.

hi lesgray;
If you look up - under local....he's only got certain port choices

I was going to suggest installing a separate TCP/IP protocol for configuring with printing on each box (perhaps configure the Ethernet adapter's TCP/IP - must NOTE/ jot down orig settings for future return), and also install the Service - File and Print Service for MS Network Clients. Make sure Access Control Tab reads "Share level", though seems to be that User level and a Master Browser list may be necessary for the Client Host machine (which is where you'd install the Printer locally) in the P2P setup. Also File and Printing button choices are allowed under Configuration Tab in Network.
This can get quite complicated depending on whether Client for MS - or is it Netware that is running. Plus all the PCs are networked, so he'll need a P2P setup to share the printer amongst all the clients....no?

Yes, depends on how the network is setup. File and Print Services does have to be installed, but I was thinking it probably was already. I don't think there needs to be a host, if the drive is installed on each machine along with the TCP/IP port. It kida depends on how many machines we're talking about. If Netware is running, then I'm not sure how that goes, been a while since I've had too deal with it.

I say a host (being whatever Client actually has the Printer locally hooked up to it) because it's unlikely all the clients could see each other because that was the Servers job to route/allocate usually..depending,.... like you say

right
on a p2p there is no host/client - I mangling the terminology;
maybe just Map Network drive (\\Domain\Workgroup) through Explorer to Printer PC....or through Network Neighborhood. Don't know of Printer Driver needs installation on each peer though.

The current Network Configuration is as follows:

RoadRunner (Cable Internet)
|
|----------->Linksys 8 port router
| | | | | |
\/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/
Win2k Server PC1 PC2 PC3 PC4 PC5
(PCs 1-4 use Win98se, PC5 uses XP Home)

Previously the Server hosted the Xerox printer but now were no longer using it. A xerox tech setup 2 of the PC's to print to the printer without using shares and no additional programs by creating a TCP/IP port. It is not on the other PC's by default so it had to be custom made.

Word around is they set it up like this:

-Use Xerox CD to install the printer and drivers
-Add Printer
Local
ECP Parrell Port
Insert Disk with Drivers and install them from CD
(Use c:\windows\options\cabs for any 98 drivers needed)

Once installed, goto Properties of the printer and goto "Ports" button and in there you can setup a IP address.

I only get one chance to head down there per week so I haven't had time to fool with it yet. But thats all I got to work on for the moment till I visit the site next week.

I want to thank you all for your help in this matter. I was able to find a TCP/IP driver for the printer which was located on the Xerox install CD. Had to add that first then install the printer and make a TCP/IP. Thanks again! -Marshall
