Hello folks,

our firewall built on slackware a few years back. the guy who set it up has gone and left no manual nor nothing. Now i have to add 2nd ip address to accept a dedicate link from ISP. i tried network and ipconfig yet no luck, i am not a slackware guy. can someone point me to the right direction where can i get some tips about simply adding a routing address to this box, and of course let it work everytime after reboot.

thanks a million!

Gary

Hi Gary,

The beauty of Slackware is that there is no standard to exactly how you may want to implement your own firewall, among many other real-world system implementations.
A distro such as Slackware has a lot of flexibility because of it does not have a cookie cutter "solution" to address everyone's needs. Only real Unix admins may need apply.

You can check /etc/rc.d/rc.local to see if he put anything in there pertinent to iptables.
He could have created script links and made a firewall script in /etc/rc.d. There are many paths one can take to implement this. I have an implementation which uses /etc/net for config files and /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall as a common single-location script.

You can search for "iptables" string being used anywhere in the root filesystem with something like
grep -r "iptables" /

There are so many possibilities, and whatever is in play now could even surely be improved as you are here asking questions.

I am available for consult if you need assistance with this issue.

I specialize in Slackware distro as a matter of fact, and have Sair/Linux GNU certification plus over 6 years experience in Linux to boot. I manage over 100 servers in an enterprise world-class environment tied to major corporate names such as LLBean and AOL (using RedHat for these applications).
