Hi all,

Just want to say I read the forums quite regularly and have picked up a lot of good tips from everyone.

Thanks very much to everyone.

I have 30 years telco experience but I am now an independant contractor. I have taken telephone company courses on the Norstar starting with 6x16 DR1 up to cics/mics 4.0. I didn't work on Norstars for about five years and now I am back at it.

Today I added a 2-port fiber expansion card to a mics 0x32 rls r1t1 with a fiber station module. The customer also has flash vm.

I waited until the end of the day, powered down the mics, added the expansion card to slot 2 and powered back up.
I didnt power down the flash vm. I left it connected to the station ports.

The system came back up okay but the vm doesnt answer calls anymore. I may have flashed the memory. I did f983 and it came back inactive code. I powered down the vm to reboot it and powered up again and waited. I then did f903 and it came back with the range f901 - f909 so I changed the range back to 981 to 989. However when I try f983 now, I get the log prompt but it wont take the 1020000 password, it just exits. I tried the config password at the log prompt, which it takes and then shows me the sn #.
It looks like it wants to be initialized again. I was hoping I wouldnt have to rebuild it from scratch.
Does anyone think the memory can be saved or does this sound like a reinstall. Is xftest of any help at this point?

One other thing...my station numbering now starts at 285 on the station module. It ended at loc 252 b4 the add. Should it have gone in slot 1?
I know in rls 4.0 the expansion card is added to slot 2.

Any response would be appreciated. I am heading back to the cust site tomorrow.

Your Voice Mail Defaulted and yes you should have gone in slot 1.

Thanks for the response galfaro.

Short and sweet to my long winded question.

One other thing I was wondering.

In the past I have disconnected the station ports from the vm but left it powered up with no problems.

I forgot to disconnect them this time. Just curious if I might have defaulted the vm because of that or because I put the expansion card in slot 2 instead of 1.

I have heard from other techs that Norstar flash vm can be touchy. First time I have had this problem.

Your DNs start at 285 because with your previously unexpanded MICS the B2 DNs were 253 to 284. So any expansion starts at 285.
And are you sure that the DN's were 3-digit b4 the upgrade. It's been a long time since I worked on R1T1 but was the default 2-digit like the old 8x24, and then went to 3-digit when expanded
As for the expansion card, you are correct. Slot 1 is for 2nd expansion card or Services Cartridge. Slot 2 for expansion card, 2 or 6 port or Combo Card. Slots 3&4 for trunk cards of various types. Placement of the card would not have affected the VM. If it was in the wrong slot it (the KSU) would have come up in Maintenance mode
Try the xftest after removing the patch cords, then reboot the VM

Thanks sprucegrover.

By the way are you in Spruce Grove, Alberta by any chance.

I'm in Cochrane, Ab. (ex-Telus & Bell Canada).

My original extension numbering b4 the addition of the expansion card was 221 to 252, 3 digit numbering.
I am hoping I can still salvage the original vm programming. When I try f983 it prompts with log: and not password:

From what you are saying am I stuck with a gap in numbering? Moving the expansion card to slot 1 would not make any difference then.

The expansion card stays in slot two. To correct the gap in numbering you must do a startup on the expanded system and reprogram the system OR manually change the DN's one at a time.

Thanks everyone for the responses.

To follow up:

- I left expansion card in slot 2 which I thought was the right spot in the first place.

- I renumbered my new extensions in system programming, a lot simpler than doing a system restart and programming entire system.

- I lost all programming in flash vm so I rebuilt it from scratch...not as bad as I thought it would be although I was suprised I lost it in the first place.
The flash software is 1.9 and the norstar is R1T1 which I assume are compatible.
