I have a Orphan Program showing up in the Add/Remove Appelet. It had an uninstall problem so I deleted all the registry keys manually. Unfortunately I cannot find it in unistall in the registry, so I suspect that is why it still appears in add/remove. (it shows no size and there are no remove, etc. Just the listing.

Here is the ques: I have one entry in the unintall registry that has no values, just zero's. It is the only one. Would that be it? Is there a way to REM it out so I can see without throwing me and my PC off a cliff or putting myself in a jackpot?

Also are regstry keys randomly generated on an install or are they specific to the application?

Thanks

Use CCleaner, there is a sub-menu where you can get rid of the offending APPLET...

usually registry keys are specific to the application in question...

as to the other question: post the key info, e.g. ScreenShot and paste a smaller version (still readable) here...

how to post images - upload it to PhotoBucket (example), get the direct link, then enter it like the following example:
[ignore]
frog.gif
[/ignore]
where **tp:// is the link of your picture (on PhotoBucket)...

THanks. I have tried CCLeaner also tried the Microsoft uninstall download. Please see if following helps:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{62369F2F77534556AEF4C58152E3BDE5}

Default: Reg_SZ Value not set
Display: Reg_SZ
FInishFlag: Reg_DWord 0X000000000(0)
Install Loc:Reg_SZ
UnistallString: Reg_SZ
WinInstaller: Reg_DWord 0X00000000 (0)

This is the only key I have found that seems off on its own. IS this what that would look like? When I run CCLeaner it doesn't show up there or when I find the Removed App in Windows unintall tool, it does not remove it.

Does this key look like a functioning key or just an orphan. Would a blank key like this keep the former application name appearing in the Add/Remove applet?

Thanks,

Tom

The following Registry Key, {62369F2F77534556AEF4C58152E3BDE5}, MAY have been created by divxpro521xp2k.exe?

Download Analysis for divxpro521xp2k.exe

If this rings any bells, you could try re-installing Divx and uninstalling it correctly.

You could just backup the key (right-click and Export) and then Delete it, or if it is not causing problems, ignore it.

The actual program was Cloudmark Spam Filter. I had an earlier version with a corrupt uninstaller which I needed to remove. IT would not uninstall thru the Add/Remove. I removed everything manually but since it still shows on the applet I wanted to find a key that I left behind. Other then the one I referenced, all keys in the registry appear to be labeled, with the exception the above referenced one.

I see you are saying you think this is a DivX key.

I tried reinstaling the Orig Cloudmark ver. over it to get the uninstall right but it wouldn't do it, so the manual remove seemed the only way to go.

If I can't find it manually will a registy cleaner handle this issue. I have already run CCleaner and the Microsoft Uninstall Utility and it doesn't work.

Is there any other way to identify what is keeping that name in the applet or where it is linked to? Other tyhan the registry keys is there anything else?

TNx

Thanks

I'm not sure a Registry Cleaner will work (it may however) if there is no link coming from that Key. You can only try, I suppose, but such "animals" are fraught with danger.

One of the best Registry Cleaners on the market (JV16) is from this company, and it is free to try before purchase.

Hand in hand with the above action you may like to make use of this free program.

"Is there any other way to identify what is keeping that name in the applet or where it is linked to? Other tyhan the registry keys is there anything else?"

Good question, someone else might have to answer that. Maybe you have some uninstalled logs with it listed in?

If you have ages of machine time to use, then you could do a text search of everything on your machine for the text "62369F2F77534556AEF4C58152E3BDE5", include System and Hidden files in any search.

Here is a list of links from Google which have some reference to that String.

When I run CCLeaner it doesn't show up there

I am assuming this is under TOOLS >> Uninstall? correct?

if that is the case, then do have a look at JV16 PowerTools or Registry Healer (the one I prefer, trial is available)...

also check here for the said program:

C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information
C:\Program Files\Uninstall Information
C:\Program Files\Common Files

remnants may lie there...

Thanks for the input..I will explore these options.. Tom

ARE THESE ORPHAN KEYS THAT CAN BE DELETED????

None of the Cleaners I have tried have identified the orphan keys. Other than uninstall, should I be looking for keys like these in other places or is uninstall where they should be located?

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{E85FA9A1-C241-4698-893B-DD99509B8DB0}]
"DisplayIcon"=",0"
"DisplayName"=""
"WindowsInstaller"=dword:00000000
"UninstallString"=""
"InstallLocation"=""

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{F64306A5-4C32-41bb-B153-53986527FAB4}]
"DisplayIcon"=",0"
"DisplayName"=""
"WindowsInstaller"=dword:00000000
"UninstallString"=""
"InstallLocation"=""

THanks..Tom

ADD-ON:

Ques: Would this possibly allow me to access and edit ADD/Remove??

REGSVR32 APPWIZ.CPL

BTW, I did use the Microsoft uninstall Utility and while I can see the Item in the screen the "Remove" does not take it out.

Tnx Tom

have you tried to search the registry with the name of that ROGUE Install App.?

I've never come across any that would not be deleted with either JV16 (or RegCleaner 4.3 the predecessor) or CCleaner... so I am at a loss, besides the above...

I did try CCLeaner it does not show in there and I also tried the Microsoft remove itilityt, it shows there but will not remove it.

Is the uninstall the only place where something would keep it in the ADD/REmove?

I have looked in all the other places in the Reg for it and there is nothing..
There is no display name or even Ver number that hoints that it is the one, anywhere.
This has me stumped.

Any comments on that RegEdit I referenced above?

ARE THESE ORPHAN KEYS THAT CAN BE DELETED????"

Not sure I understand your question about the Keys you mention. Those entries do not seem correct to me. All my entries have a "UninstallString" that is a proper location and not a Null value.

Reregistering APPWIZ.CPL will not break anything but at the same time it is not likely to fix your problem with incorrect entries in the Registry.

As long as you backup your Keys you should be able to delete those Keys manually. The Keys you mention do not appear to be critical Windows Registry Keys.

If you have no recent backups, the only way to guarantee a repair your Registry (and only if it is causing you problems or upsetting you greatly) would be a clean install of Windows. A repair install, as opposed to a clean install, copies and saves lots of the Registry settings by design.

When you make changes in the Registry, it is often necessary to reboot the machine for any changes to be made active.

This thread is just some background on the working of the Add or Remove Applet and not a solution.

Thanks all. Ben I've tried the WIndows Cleanup Utility and this App does show up but when I hit remove, it doesn't remove it...

This issue is not impacting my machine I just am stumped as to why I can't resolve this issue since, at least logically - there must be a solution.. I think we have discussed most of them. Makes me wish I had a Go Back Drive or something but a little late for that.

Obviously a reinstall is not in the cards but I can't imagine anythng other than Registry Key(s) that would be what is behind this.

Can there be anything else other than a key that I should be lookiong for?

Thanks for your input.

Best,

Tom

UPDATE: I did another search of my registry using "find" etc. I found ONE lousy key that I missed before after doing several full searches.. Pilot Error? Don't know but that fixed the issue.

OBSERVATION: Registry Clearner CCleaner did not find the key and also the Microsoft Reg uninstall utility did not remove it eventhough it found it (did not show where it was)

Thanks everyone for your kind interest and assistance.

Tom

Where was the key, and was it "{62369F2F77534556AEF4C58152E3BDE5}"?

I guess the moral of this story is that when you use Find in RegEdit, make sure the other settings in the Find Box are correct, especially the one related to "Match whole string only".

Now your other wish can come true.

RozTom - glad you found the culprit and solved the mystery...

I had installed the APP (Outlook version), to see if it behaved as you described, but it did not the uninstall was clean and it did not leave any remnants on my test machine...

PS: as Linney pointed out, a BackUp scheme should be inplace, incase something along this line or worse should happen... I also do not recommend GoBack under XP, it worked fine with W2k but I had nothing but trouble with it (customer machines), which included e.g. locked HDD's and no Boot ups...
