I tried everything, i looked at the security settings, i tried to launch it from the disk cleanup utility, i tried to launch it from the help shortcuts, i looked at the event log for any errors and nothing? I have not changed anything on the server for awhile and i can't think of anything that has been added as far as programs or anything. i have tried to install something thinking it sill give it a boost but i had no success. I simply can not open add/remove programs, when i double click it or right click and hit open it does nothing? has anyone out there had any similar problems? there is another DC on the Lan and it works fine. Nothing else is wrong with the server, only that i can't open that. Thanks, PAUL

A long shot.....
But I had this problem also. Terminal Services were loaded and for some weird reason the add/remove programs DID work from a terminal server session.
I removed a whole load off stuff that way, rebooted and now server is happy again.

Well, I am going through the terminal service session, i haven't tried going locally on the computer. I try that but i wanted to make sure that you said that throught the terminal service sessions it did work. you wouldn't happend to remmeber what type of things were intalled would you? The only thing i remmeber installing lately is an iis lockdown tool provided by microsoft, but after i moved iis to another DC i uninstalled iis. and i think thats when it started giving me this problem. Thanks, PAUL

Nothing weird was installed, just Office, an old copy of SQL7 and a demo on Exch2000.
Removed this lot, rebooted and machine back to normal.
Never quite got to the bottom of all this, but the server is back to normal....

Paul,

Silly question, but are you logging in as the Admin account on the machine or as your personal account? If your user account doesn't have permission to add / remove programs from the machine, it *might* prevent you from getting access to the Add / Remove icon.

Just a weird thought out of left field, but I've heard of similair problems elsewhere. Catadmin - MCSA

I had this problem with a server of mine recently. I wish i had the Technet article but you have to re-install the current version of Internet Explorer. I know it sounds weird but it worked for me on 2 occasions.

I had this problem with SBS2000, but it fixed itself! maybe when i upgraded it to IE6 or something. I'd rollback any patches/service packs and then reapply them one at a time and test it. Time consuming i know!

OK people i fixed the problem i did not upgrade IE the only thing i did is register the following services like murphypa said to. I registered all of them so i don't know which one did it.

regsvr32 mshtml.dll
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll -i
regsvr32 shell32.dll -i

thnx for posten people Thanks, PAUL
