We are trying to add PRI connectivity to an existing system (currently uses DS1). We were quoted a hefty cost by our vendor - and some of the line items don't seem to make sense (to me). Anyone know why we would need "MSDN Software Options" just to connect PRI to one controller? Also, what is a "Network Service Unit"? I thought there was a PRI card. Is this a replacement for it? Why would you need a DSU FIM Carrier & FIM Module for this?

I would appreciate any assistance - when your vendor has absolutely no competition, you have to do some double-checking once in a while.

Thanks-

The PRI card has been manufacture-discontinued and replaced with a seperate stand-alone chassis called an NSU (Network Service Unit) - They're functionally identical to and about the same cost as the PRI card so it's no big deal. Both the PRI card and NSU support 2 PRI links. However, you will need to purchase an additional digital link (software option) if you wish to make use of the 2nd link of the NSU. Your PBX software only supports 1 digital link by default. You pay for any additional that you need. This is true whether you use a PRI card or an NSU.

Your 2000ML must also be at software level LW29 Rls 3 (Q26.13.1) or later and yes, you will need the MSDN software bundle (this is a collection of several options that are required for the PBX to be able to handle PRI). There's no getting around it. However, you need only purchase this MSDN bundle once. Thereafter you can add additional PRI T1s and only have to pay for the additional digital link licenses and the additional NSU units, as needed.

In checking this a little more I think you're actually going to need to be at LW32 to use an NSU, but likely you're OK there else you'd be complaining about the cost of a software upgrade :)

Both the SX2000 light and 2000 Microlight requires a Fim card because the NSU connects to the main control over fiber (the same as it would to a DSU node and PRI card). You need the additional FIM Carrier card with the microlight because unlike the regular 2K-light, on the ML there is nowhere to plug in the additional FIM card.

Trust your dealer. Sounds like he's shooting straight with you.

Get a card off ebay oranother vendor the microlight supports pri in the embedded DSU.

Just my nickels worth here. As trouble prone and fragile as that card is, eBay would probably be the last place I'd want to be buying one. They are difficult enough to set up that you don't want to be hamstrung by something being wrong with the card or it needing a s/w upgrade to be compatible with the O/S your ML is running. It's no fun chasing ghosts. Besides, you're still going to need the software options on your PBX and the only place you're going to get those is from your dealer.
