Not sure how to go about doing this. We have an Merlin Magix phone system here, and I'm trying to add a new extension internally. The internal extension is 151, but it's patched to the outside, so it should be a Direct dial line

When I call internally, ext 151 won't go anywhere. When I call it from outside, it goes directly to the receptionist. So how do I "add" this extension so that bypasses the receptionist and rings directly to the phone?

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

This answer is assuming you have an extension that has dial tone on it, and it is labeled 151. That is, you can call out from it, but as you stated, it can not be called.

You are describing an extension that has not be "SYSTEM RENUMBERED" to match your DIAL PLAN.

First, you must determine the number this extension presently has. (THE "OLD" NUMBER)

This is easily done by calling the Operator from that extension, and she can tell you what the extension number is.

Then, with either SPM or using the "BIG CONSOLE PHONE", Under SYSTEM RENUMBER, SINGLE, EXTENSION, the system will ask for THE "OLD" Number, enter what you discovered above, and then you will be prompted for THE "NEW" Number.

Enter 151.

If you want Voice Mail for this extension, a bit more programming will be required.

If you are trying to add an extension you first need an empty slot available on an extension module - like a 412TDL or 024TDL. You also need to know what that extension's number is. So plug the line for the new phone into an open slot (easiest right by the phone system) - and call another internal phone with a display to see what extension number shows up. You may then need to renumber that slot's extension# to what you want it to be.

As for when you call extension 151 from an outside line - and it doesn't exist - the default is for the call to transfer to the operator. When you dial it internally - it goes nowhere - because ext 151 does not exist - yet. You will have to create it by renumbering an empty extension slot. Those unused slots are probably numbered somewhere in the 7100's range from the original setup of the system.

Thanks guys! I'm doing it now, I'll let you know how it goes. But does a physical phone have to actually be plugged into a jack for this to work.

Here's what I'm really doing. We're companyA, and we do work for companies B and C. But we only have 1 "customer support" person. So I need her to be able to tell who the call is for: CompanyB or CompanyC.

So we have 2 "800" numbers, each pointing to 2 different local numbers: 888-1234 and 888-4321. 888-1234 will ring internal extension x234, which is labled "companyB" in the phone system and set to forward calls to the customer support lady. 888-4321 will ring internal extension x321 and is labled "companyC" in the phone system and is set to forward to the same woman. So when her phone rings, she can see the call is either being transferred from CompanyB or CompanyC and knows how to answer the phone.

So 2 questions: Is there a simpler way to do this, or am I just crazy, and 2) Does the phone that's just a label and forwarding calls need to sit on an empty desk somewhere?

Thanks again!

Only if someone has to hear the phone ring. Your other option is to use a "phantom" phone for the forwarding in other words an adjunct. Each 44xx series phone has an adjunct extension number that can be used as a "phantom" phone. You can put a primary cover button on each "phantom" adjunct on the operator phone and label them Co. A, Co. B, etc. - so the operator can see/hear the phantom phone ring
