I'm trying to find a way to add an A record to my DNS server for a host that is not in my domain. Is this possible with Win 2003?

Currently I've been adding the host into the HOSTS file of each workstation that accesses this remote server but now I need to give the entire organization accesss to it. The thought of having to manually configure all of those HOSTS files manually makes me feel nauseous.

Please help. thanks.

Sure. Just create a normal host record with the remote host's IP address.

That would work... if I wanted to give the host a different name. I appologize, I should have been more clear.

I need to create a DNS record on my local domain (domainXYZ.local) for a host with a FQDN of intra.domainABC.com

I'm not sure I know how to do this or even if it's possible.

It might just work. Create "intra.domainabc.com.domainxyz.local" and see what happens. I just tried and it seems to work.

The "real" way to do it is to add domainabc.com to your DNS server, and create "intra" under it. If this is just one host in a domain of many, you might have trouble and it might be better to have the domainabc.com people add the host.

Why does it have to be an A record? What you are describing is a CNAME (alias). Under the zone for the domainXYZ.local domain make a CNAME record intra and in the field for fqdn put intra.domainABC.com. Then intra.domainXYZ.local will resolve to intra.domainABC.com. As long as your dns server can resolve intra.domainABC.com to an IP address your clients will too.
