I have an HP L2000 netserver. (Windows 2K server) It has an 1si raid controller with 3 drives in a raid 5. There are 3 empty slots. This server is in production, and I finally got the okay to purchase additional drives for hot spares. I have the netraid assistant software loaded on it so I believe I can mark a new drive loaded in as a hot spare (to test each of the drives -- they are used and come with a 30 day guarantee) and then leave 1 in as a hot spare and another on the shelf. What I was wondering is.... will It affect Win2K at all? And would it be safer to slide out the space keeper and slide in the disk while it is up and running (hot swap rack/tray) as opposed to shutting it down and having the possibility of Windows seeing it before I can mark it in the software? Has anybody done this? I will do a full backup and a new ERD disk before it ... can anybody think of anything else I should do?

Thanks in advance.

Should be a no-brainer. I'd just add it in hot and use your Array sotware to mark it as a online spare...

As for worrying about it when it is shut down, I doubt this would cause a conflict. Win2k won't recognize the drive till you either add it with your Array software or through the Disk Mgmt snap-in...

Thanks,

Thank you, I probably worry too much. The drives come on the 15th so I will get a good backup and give it a try. I really appreciate your answer.
