I have a regular CD and just installed a Panasonic CDRW.
BIOS finds the CDRW, WIndows recognizes it, every thing was looking good, then I installed Adaptec CDr software. Nightmare since. The cd is reported as not-ready by Adaptec CD s/w, trying to explore the CDRW in Win wil lock up the sys. If there is no CD in the CDRW all is good. I believe the CDRW is OK, (i used it to install Adaptec s/w)
I think it is related to the adaptec s/w.....help!!!!!

Either:
Uninstall any other package your installed along with adaptec.

Or:
Install Nero. You wont look back after that. Works better too.

Clive
clive@digitalsky.co.za

I assemble and sell these things.

thanks Clivo,

i have heard that about Nero, will try it out - they have a free demo.

is it true that the root problem is the aspi (?) driver, the one that links the ATAPI drivers to the device? i was told microsoft and adaptec are rasslin' over whose driver is best and basically they don't get along.

neither adaptec or microsoft admit any fault........ (suprize suprize)

Probably would pull both out, then put the R/W in and get it working, then add the other one back. People that write software generally think the only thing you have is what you got from their company and they don't put the proper hooks in.
Ed Fair
efair@atlnet.com

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.
Clivo......

got Nero......
dumped Adaptec......
installed Nero.....

sniff , sniff smell that Cd burn !!!

Adaptec CD? - there is a beer sitting on it.

Thanks............. ;)

Yeah!..........
Clive
clive@digitalsky.co.za

I assemble and sell these things.

The problem may be with the drivers for the ide controller. If the ide controller uses UDMA that can cause problems with the cd writer. I had the same problem with my cd writer until I got the latest ide controller drivers and changed the inf file so that the Secondary IDE controller does not use UDMA. Also make sure the cd writer is the secondary master and the cd rom is the secondary slave.

Hi HardwareTech.......

did try that, got the drv from the mobo site, disabled udma, and still grief.

everything is cool till i load adaptec s/w.

even with the CDRW solo, on its own channel, new drv, etc all good till the adaptec s/w is installed.

oh well, 5 hours of messing around is enough, i'll stay with the Nero s/w.

thanks for the input!

I experienced the same problem. The other guys are right. You may have problem with UDMA channel. If your IDE controller is built-in with the motherboard then try to change your motherboard with other brand.
I also experienced that when you installed the driver in auto mode the windows will be corrupted. Try to install the driver manually but I suspect your IDE controller may not be functioning properly.
