AD migration...

I have a huge migration project looming around the corner...well in fact the powers to be need it in place in a few weeks!!!...doh...

Here's the current environment...

Company A - NT4 DomainA - NT4 Mail Members, NT4 PDC, NT4 BDC
Company A - 2000 AD DomainA (Native) - Users

Company B - NT4 DomainB - 2000 Mail Members, 2000 PDC, 2000 BDC

Company C - NT4 DomainC - 2000 PDC BDC, 2000 Mail Members

The management plan is to create one new AD (2003) then migrate all the other domains into one, or maybe creating a new root domain then adding the other upgraded domains as childs!?!?!?

Anyone done anything similar? Got any good links or docs worth reading up on??

The main problem you have is time!

Go for the root domain with other domains as childs as you say, in our company it goes something like this.

Main company domain
World area specific domain (ie Europe, America, Asia)
Country local specific (ie Manchester)
Computers
Users

If you stick everything in one big domain it can get messy.

Also, for each user we had to do this
Migrate their network account to AD (server).
Set up AD domain on their computer(s) (client).
Log on to AD on their computer create AD account (client).
Copy the computers profile from old account to AD (client).
Test new account.

So if the powers that be think that everyone will be up and running on AD within 2-3 weeks you can tell them it will probably take a bit longer than that ;-)

...I forgot to mention that we want to tie in NDS MetaDirectory at the same time!!
