AD - Joining a forest

Here is the scenario:

I currently have an NT domain (all 2000 boxes except for pdc and bdc). There is a trust set up between our boston office and ny (I am in NYC). My question is this, our boston office will be setting up as root of a forest in which we will be a member. This may not happen for a few months. My question is this, can i upgrade my domain(in NYC) to AD and still join the forest created in boston in the future? If so, are there any pointers or considerations I need to take into account?
