activex and scripting problems online

I'm running XP with SP2 on an emachine.
I appear to have activex and scripting programs running that I am not aware of. I regularly receive notice that a page can't open because my settings deny activex and scripting. I visited Symantec site for a free checkup, and followed instructions to allow such, and still can't get it working.
is there a way to find out what programs are doing the activex and scripting work that will not symantec site to work correctly?

I'm not sure what leads you to think "I appear to have activex and scripting programs running that I am not aware of".

Have you tried adding Symantec's site to the list of Trusted Sites in Internet Explorer?

Hi,
In Internet Explorer click on Tool then Manage Add-Ons.
In the Show box you should see Add-Ons currently loaded in Internet Explorer.
If you click on the blue arrowhead you should Add-Ons that have been used by Internet Explorer

I have advanced tool bar twice.
AIM
Windows Messenger (Enabled)
Yahoo Login (Enabled)
Yahoo Messenger (Enabled
and a large string of number/letters from safer networking.

Is that any help?
I have also discovered that the hyperlinks from Outlook Express have stopped working again. I have followed the instructions from MS on that, with no success.
I have to do a cut and paste to get the OE links to IE.

Oh Yeah. For the List of trusted sites, the site button is greyed out, so I can't add anything.
