I entered the group name and then entered "local" in the
Internet domain name box so that the DNS did not have to
resolve the FQDN (fully qualified domain name). I get the
following error.

"The network location cannot be reached".

Is there something else that has to be set before running this wizard?

TIA,
OO

HI,

I also had this error when installing Win2000 with
a 10/100 mbit nic and NOT connected with a hub or switch.

1. Or you take a hub, connect it and try again.
2. put a 10 mbit nic with BNC Terminator on it, and you
are now able to install it.

joeri,

Thanks for the tip(s). We did finally figure out that it was some kind of network issue. We brought the box to a site which had an active network and hooked it up temporarily. The install was successfull after that and we can now boot up the server even if it is not connected to a network.

Thanks again,
OO

Just my story for U -
I have a test machine that I recently loaded 2000 advsvr on. After playing with active directory, dns, and such, I wiped the box clean, and did another clean install, this time for keeps. When I went to install Active Directory, and create a local domain, I got the same error you reported.
Strange, yes, but I also noticed that it would not let me Lock The Worktstation. Registry/Security policy was not restricting it, but it was still greyed out.
Being short on time, i blew the whole thing away again, and re-installed. - All was well.

Third time is the charm I guess....
