Hello there,

Does anyone know how to go about adding users to a security group by picking up a specific entry for e.g
A user within accounts OU with accounts set in deaprtments field gets automatically added to the accounts security group.
I want to avoid the nightmare of doing this manually.

Thanks Richard

You can do this via VBScript, pop over to the VBScript forum FAQ's to see if there is anything of help there.

Is there any other way to do it without using a VBscript?

Thanks Richard

You could create an account in each OU and use it as a template. Say Sales OU, create an account called SalesTemp and add all the security groups that a standard Sales employee would get. Each time you have to create a new Sales employee, right-click on the SalesTemp account and choose copy...

The above suggestion still requires some manual intervention but it would cut down on time.

To fully automate I would also use VBScript.

If you want to modify account poperties in bulk check out ADModify.exe

Cheers Guys for the input, i need to get myself on a vb course!! But i`ll do the template suggestion for now.

Thanks Richard

Cheers for the Link does indeed sound like the best thing to do.

Thanks Again guys.

Richard

One last question, can you use any programs to create VB scripts for you? Or is it a case of purchasing Microsoft VB and work with that?

Thanks Richard

VBScript is integrated into W2K, XP and W2K3 operating systems (oops, forgot Vista but I don't know if there are any security implications).

You can use NOTEPAD to create and edit the VBS file (with a *.VBS extension), no need to purchase Full VB

Ahh great thanks again guys for your input!

Cheers Richard

Also download the WMI Tools from the Scripting Center. I use it to see the available classes, properties, and methods available on a system. Makes it easier when you start to build your own scripts.
