Windows XP pro is installed with and unlimited license that does not require activation. After installing the latest updates from windows updated for the security flaw announced on 2/11/04 I get the error message:

0x8007007f A problem is preventing windows from accurately checking the license on this computer.

I tried a KB article telling me to delete certain registry keys that pertain to the default secutiy provider but these keys do not exist. I can't restore because I have no restore point. Is there anything I can do besides deleting each update manually until I am able to log in under normal mode.

Are you sure you downloaded the update for the correct version of windows?

It was installed from windows update after windows update query's the machine. I would imagine after the machine is queried the right updates are displayed.

Can you uninstall the update that caused the problem via Add or Remove? Which update are we talking about, there have been several this week.

That's exactly what I did. I booted to safe mode and removed the last hot fix in the list. I got lucky and that was the update that caused the problem cause everything was fine after that. But, I'd really like to know what caused it. This was the latest update that made the headlines about a flaw enabling hackers to run malicious programs. I didn't have this problem with any of the machines on my network. These machines are a desktop and laptop at one of our exec's home. I'd like to be able to get these updates on them. Do you think this was a one time problem?

Not sure which update you are referring to. Was it one of these?

MS04-007 - ASN .1 Vulnerability Could Allow Code Execution (828028)
MS04-004 - Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer(832894)
MS04-006 - Vulnerability in the Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) Could Allow Code Execution (830352)

The only one that I have seen reports of a problem with was 832894 and that was allegedly fixed by a release in the past couple of days.

It might be worth trying a new download of the update causing problems in case it was just a bad download file.

It was 823980. I'll try it this weekend locally myself. If it happens again I'll just uninstall again. I'll let you know what happens.

Boot into SAFE MODE, Start / Run and type in

regsvr32.exe regwizc.dll
Enter
regsvr32.exe licdll.dll
Enter

Reboot.

What will those registry edits do? I mispoke before, the update is 828028.

They are not registry edits.
They re-register the license and activation components for the afffected computer.

Ok, great. That will come in handy if it happens again. Thanks for all your help.
