ACT - intermittent problem viewing attachments

a number of users in our offices are experiencing intermittent issues viewing word 2000/2003 attachments on records in ACT - this is occuring on client machines as well as on the server and terminal server versions.... any ideas what could be causing this.
 
What version of ACT! - full build from Help | About?
Are they in Notes, History, Document tab?
Does ACT! show the correct icon in tab?
How are you trying to view them?

tried fresh installation on client machine - hasnt helped.

using version 10.0 2008 (act premium)

attachments on 'history' tab

correct icon shows

trying to open by double clicking icon - works interrmitently.
 
10.0.???

Are you running 10.02 or 10.03? If not, you should try to update.

Also, what happens when it doesn't work?

nothing happens - just doesnt open attach document.....
 
Two things:

See if you can update to 10.03 from the act.com downloads page - you need to update ALL users.

See if anything is running in Task Manager when it doesn't open
