Hello,

I can't install ACT 2008. I get the following error message

1: - 1104 2: Unable to start IIS Admin Service

I am using windows xp service pack 2
I checked the IIS Admin service and it is set to the automatic start up type.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

No problem Mike. Should I find a solution, I will gladly post it in this forum. Thanks again.

I can tell you that 90% of problems I see with ACT! are related to problems with the operating system.

I have have always found that Windows operates better when I re-format and reinstall my operating system about every 6-9 months.

I can understand that percent. Are you saying though that the problems are things going wrong with people's OS or that there should be more testing before releasing a new version. Honestly, I've never had this type of trouble installing software (uninstalling software is a different problem - smile).

Any idea why windows goes astray?
If I had the time and didn't have so much software installed and tweaked, I, like many other people would probably consider reformatting the hard drive.

I understand why reformatting is done, it's just difficult, even if you create an image of the hard drive weekly.

With so many laptops priced under $1,000, I think many will start to buy a 2nd machine that will only be used for testing purposes or in my case, creating training classes. Then formatting the drive will not be such a big deal because I/we wouldn't have critical email and other documents installed on it.

What do you think about that (somewhat expensive) alternative to formatting the drive of the ONLY laptop that you have? If you think it's a good idea, please send donations to . . . . (smile)

The problems are with the OS... ACT!'s problem is that it's built from the ground up to use Microsoft components like .Net and SQL Server. It's when these have issues that the installs go wrong.

The trick is to have 2 partitions... one for the data and one for the applications. This makes installing the OS and apps an easier task.

Better yet, instad of another machine, just boast the RAM and use VMWare. Then create a seperate virtual machine with a clean OS for each major task. Store all the data on the host OS. Then rr-creating one virtual machine OS and application is simple.... and you can leave the failing one to look at with support later :)

Mike, I believe you when you say that it's the OS. I've tried several times to uninstall Visual Studio 2003 and the error messages seem to point to some windows file that is either missing or not where the uninstall code thinks it should be.

I understand the rationale for having 2 partitions, but if the OS and other software are in the same partition, wouldn't I still have the same problem.

When I said "another machine", i wasn't talking anything high end, something under a grand that would run the software that i need. then i could just drop a generic image back on the hard drive on move on to the next project.

I want to thank you again for trying to help me resolve this problem. My new laptop should be here in 10 days, so I'll try installing act first, just to see what happens.

Yup... if you can't uninstall VS, then the OS is damaged and ACT! won't install. Also, it's likely that the damage will get worse and you will risk actually losing data.
