Hello,

I can't install ACT 2008. I get the following error message

1: - 1104 2: Unable to start IIS Admin Service

I am using windows xp service pack 2
I checked the IIS Admin service and it is set to the automatic start up type.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Hi Mike,

This is a new install.
I select all of the options on the install wizard screen and parts of act get installed. There is a system check dialog box at the bottom of the screen.

After I click OK on that dialog box, the system check dialog box changes and says something like "backing out" something.

The first time that I tried to install the software a big dialog box popped up that said something like microsoft sql some will be installed, but it went away too quick for me to read everything on it. After that box went away, the installation continued for maybe 20-30 seconds then I got the error message.

I don't remember how I installed IIS back in the day, but I will go look on microsoft's web site to see if I can figure out how to reinstall it to see if that helps.

I looked on act.com's knowledge base, but I didn't see anything close to this error, but I plan to look again in a few minutes.

I don't think it's an IIS issue, I think it's an issue with the Microsoft SQL installer by the sound of it.

Can you check if there's anything listed in the Windows Event Log?

Where is the windows event log?
Or should I ask what the file name is?

In my previous message, I forgot to include the following:

when I try to start the IIS service by clicking on the "start" link". I get this message

"Could not start the IIS Admin service on local computer
Error 3: The system cannot find the oath specified"

I am doing this from the services screen that lists every service on the hard drive

For the Event Log, right-click on My Computer and select Manage.

If you can't start the IIS Admin service, this might explain why MS SQL Server is not able to install

Hi Mike,

Under system tools, I'm looking at some error event log and I see this message. Is this what you are asking me to find?

The description for Event ID ( 8896 ) in Source ( MsiInstaller ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Product: ACT! by Sage 2008 (10.0) -- 1: -1104 2: Unable to start IIS Admin Service , (NULL), (NULL), (NULL).

That's where I was - my computer then manage.

Does this mean that somehow my IIS got messed up and that I need to re-install it?

Definetely some corruption... not sure from that message it it's with IIS or the Microsoft MSInstaller.

You might try reinstalling both

I tried re-installing IIS via the add remove programs option, but I don't think that it worked either time. After installing it, I rebooted the computer, thinking that would make a difference.

I still get the "could not start the IIS admin service . . .

on the recovery tab the program path is c:\winnt\system32\iisreset.exe

I don't know what MSInstaller is, but I'll look it up on microsoft's web site now.

Thank you.

ok, thank you, i'll give msinstaller a whirl and see if that fixes things.

if that doesn't work, if i install act 2007, then install 2008 over it, do you think that would fix the problems?

can i scream now? LOL

I don't think the problem is the msinstaller. i think there is something wrong with my IIS. I've looked on microsoft's web site to see if i could download iis, because it doesn't seem like it's installing from the add/remove dialog box. I couldn't find the download file.

After I installed the msinstaller, I tried installing act 2008 again. The majority of it installs, but I get the same unable to start iis admin service problem.

I'm trying to think which software package I have that will install IIS. I'm thinking visual studio does, so I'll try reinstalling that to see what happens.

This shouldn't be this difficult.

I would have tried installing IIS after the MSinstaller.... don't worry about trying to install ACT! till the Microsoft bits are working. You'll just end up with an implementation you won't be happy with

I reinstalled IIS again after reading your message about doing it after installing msinstaller, but that didn't work either. I looked on the win xp cd for the file, but can't find it. Do you know what the file name is on the windows xp cd for IIS or if there is someplace online to download IIS? I've searched online for it, but can't find it. I use to have version 5.1 of IIS and I think it's best that I try to put that version on.

I was afraid that you were going to say something like that.

It just dawned on me to look here to see if there is a forum just for IIS and there is, so I posted a message there to see if someone can figure out why my IIS is no longer working.

I know it use to work because I used it for dreamweaver. I honestly can't remember the last time that I know that it was working though.

I'm starting to think that it may be a security or rights issue, even though I have admin rights.

I can't thank you enough for helping me. I really appreciate it.
