Act 2006 Premium down to Act 2006 Standard 1

Hello - I am trying to open a database that was created in Act 2006 Premium for Workgroups with Act 2006 standard edition. I can seem to open it - any ideas?
 
You need to open it in the Premium version and use Save_As to save it in the standard format.

The Premium version has functions not available in the standard version, so these will be lost in the conversion.

Thanks for the message. I have tried that - Every time I try to open the "saved as" database, I get a "device activation error" along with a box that says "working" with blue lights flashing across the screen. Act! 6 does not seem to want to open the Act6! for work groups database. Do you know of a way to export all the data including notes and scheduling so that it can be imported into the other version? - I apprecaite any help! Thanks SNS
 
There is no ACT! 6 for workgroups... I assume both are the same build of ACT! 2006?

What are the exact build numbers of both versions (from Help | About)

The database I want to convert is currently in in: Act by Sage Premium for workgroups Version 8.0.2.82.

I am trying to convert it to: ACT! by Sage 2006 Version 8.0.2.82

One is premium for workgroups and one is not - thanks again for your help
 
I tried everything but it did not work. When I stop the MSSQL$ACT7 service, I cannot open or save as the database. I should mention that I am trying to open and conver the database on a different PC. My goal is to have a database reside on my server which can be accessed by any workstation using the non-workgroup version of Act. I worked this way with older versions of ACT. I thought I could do this with the workgroup version, but it fat too complicated for me to work with.
 
Ahhh... that explains it.

No, that won't work. You need to have the application for the version of the database installed on the server.

ACT! 7.0 and later have moved to "client/server" database, which is more powerful as much of the work is done on the server itself.

You only stop the service so you can copy the database to the machine running the other version.

The only options would be to host the standard version on a different machine or upgrade all the users to Workgroups.

Thanks - I havea new question. With Act6.0 Standard - Can I create a new database and store it on the server to be accessed from various workstations that have Act 6.0 installed - I used to do this with older versions of act
 
Yes. ACT! 6.0 (and earlier) were not client/server and just need to access the file. They don't need any application on the server to run.

BTW: If doing Email merges from ACT! 6.0, have a look at MergeMaster! Pro -

I'm sorry - I meant Act 2006 not Act 6.0 - can Act 2006 be sued the same way as 6.0? Sorry for all the confusion!
 
If I install Act2006 on my server, and have an active database on the server, will I be able to access the database from multiple workstations? Old versions of Act were so much easier to work with!
 
The standard (non-Workgroups) can share for a max of 9 users. You could even serve it from a users machine if it's just for a few users.

Why are you running multiple versions?

Why not switch to Workgroups for everyone and solve it?

The new versions are a bit more complex to set up and understand, but faster, more features and support more users

I used the earlier version with no problems for a long time. I recently bought the Act Premium 2006 but found far too complex for me to configure. I just bought Act2006 thinking it would be as easy as the older versions. Are you saing that If I put a database on my server that I will be able to open that database from any workstation? Do yo uuse any chat programs while online like Yahoo or AOL? Your help is greatly appreciated! SNS
 
Premium and standard are the same to setup and run if not using the additional features.

BTW: Why 2006? The current 2008 is faster and better in many ways.

I installed Act 2006 on my server then tried to open the database from a work station and got an error saring it could not find the database on my host PC - How can I have a database on my server that I can have multiple people access from various work stations?
 
The database has to be on the machine running ACT! first - can you open it there?

Then share the database and copy the PAD file to the workstations.

Take the time to read and the links from it that are relevant to your implementation.

I can open the database on the sever where I created it. Does the Pad file need to go to any particulat place on the workstation?
 
Nope... Database folder is usual. It just tells ACT! where the database it

PAD = Pointer to ACT! Database

You can open them in Notepad
