acs upgrade from 1.1 to rel 6 1

am upgrading customer from acs 1.1 to rel 6 can i back up current processor to its back up restore card and then install new processor and use the 1.1 backup card in the new to processor and do restore ??or do i have to look at current processor programing and just manually reprogram the new processor?
 
If you are replacing the processor (which is a good idea considering you currently have a 1.1) You would have to reprogram everything from scratch. the only other option is

1 power up the new processor without the backup/restore/upgrade card in it

2 plug a system phone into it and do a feature 59 just to be sure that Release 6 software is already in it.

3. If it does, power down the old system and remove any existing PC Cards, and put in the New card that came with the R6 processoor.

4. It should uprgade the 1.1 to an R6 Do a manual backup

5. You can now restore that manual backup in the new processor.

6. Swap the processors and you're good to go. And you have a spare R6. Just keep in ming the the OLD hardware will probably eventually have power supply/heat issues so you really are Upgrading the hardware to better hardware too.

How come your replacing the processor rather than just running the upgrade flash card on it? All ACS processors are supposed to be upgradable to v6 (per the rel 6 documentation). Wouldn't that be much cheaper, and easier to upgrade?

If it were my customer, I would go the New processor route and save the old one. The R3's and above have better electronics.
Plus if you warantee the upgrade you are gambling with an old processor that has known issues. If you install a new one (unless you have an out of box failure) chances are you will be good for a while, unless you have an out of box failure.

On the other hand if you have a Cheap customer who wants to save money and take the risk go for the flash upgrade.

The choice is theirs.

Weren't there some issues with trying to flash upgrade the 1's and 2's? I thought Avaya was only supporting the upgrades of 3's and above.
 
Yes, you can flash the 1.0.1 and up, but weak chips and power supplies in versions earlier than R3 tended to shorten their lives. Coupled with the fact that upgrades are usually done to systems that are in high call volume/large system size environments, that means old CPUs bumped to newer revs and worked harder tend to fail. Kinda like putting nitrous oxide on a Corvair. Yeah, it'll run great... for a little while ;-)
 
TTECH & 392 are correct.

You need to be careful in what environment you upgrade any PRE R3.0 ACS Processor. Lucent has had major problems with the PRE R3.0 power supplies. Maybe a class Action suit is in order - even as much as I love Bell labs genius', this is rediculous!

The PSs have many specific design or component issues that are easily fixed by properly rebuilding them. Those circuit boards - PRE R3.0 - also have port chips that are prone to failure. As standard repair procedure in our repair lab work, we are replacing ALL the 8 station port chips and haven't had one failure since we instituted this policy. It is an extra $25.00 cost but "good medicine". What is the cost to our reputation when a customer has an in-use failure of their processor? $25.00 seems fairly insignificant! Very strange issues with the older chips ... you would get a defective PRE R3.0 processor in for repair with say - 2 station chips out, and we replace these chips and rebuild the power supply ... then upon power up the other 6 chips would fail. If that didn't happen, some ports would fail usually within the next 90 days,

Another major problem we have seen happening out in the "market" is that refurb shops, remarketers etc. are relabeling the older processors. An easy visual test to tell if your processor's main board is PRE R3.0 is to look into the PCMCIA dual slots on the front of the shell. There is a small round white plastic board alignment stud that should always show on ALL ACS processors, but the PRE R3.0s don't have the on board built in small fuse on each side of the white round board post - just open green board space. It has got to be such a problem, that we have told all our dealers that we reserve the right to determine the actual release of any ACS processor that comes in for repair. We are now even seeing PRE R3.0s coming in with new complete ACS R5.0 labels. There is even a company on EBAY selling complete relabel kits????

Saving a few dollars for the risk of "in-use" failure just doesn't seem wise. Buy an "real" R4.0 where you can be sure it has the newer style design power supply and port chips as not ALL R3.0s from the factory had the newer style station port chips. We repair very few R4.0 and R5.0 processors unless they get serious power surges.
