ACPI and Shutdown

Just disabled ACPI (changed to Standard PC).

Current situation is that when i select shutdown it only turns off my harddisks. But i really would like it if Shutdown turns off my entire PC.

Is this possible and how?

As far as I know Not with out ACPI. That is whay your system does shutdown. Without ACPI your system should come to a screen that states it is ok to shutdown. James Collins

Yep. Now it is just like NT4. I get that 640x480 "Its ok to shutdown" only after enabling HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\PowerDownAfterShutdown to 1 else my screen only goes black.

Oh well, my system is most of the time up and running (and much faster without ACPI), but thanx for the explanation

and if the mainboard doesn't have ACPI built-in what is the solution?
For example I have an older mainboard (Socket 7) and I don't have ACPI and Win2K bring the system on that f*** screen: "It's now safe to..."
What should I do so I can turn off the system (under win2k)
[please no solutions like:" buy a new mainboard"]

If your board is not ACPI compliant then you cannot turn off the system automatically. It will always come to the "It is now safe.." screen. hat ACPI compliant mainboards do is send a command to the Power supply to turn off. Non-ACPI systems cannot do that. Are you sure yours is not ACPI? On some boards it can be disabled in the BIOS. What type of board is it? James Collins

If the motherboard is ACPI compliant then you will be able to turn it on under the power options aplet in controal panel. Otherwise you will just have to stick around and switch it off manually by holding on the power button for 4 seconds.
