Acess on a website

Is it a feasible idea to develop an accounting package on Microsoft Access, put it on a website and have branches of your organisation who may be located around the country (or abroad) log in and enter accounting information etc. Is it actually technically possible to do this?

Some other questions
Would other users have to have the package on their pc
Would they have to have Access on their pc?
Would there be problems with concurrent users accessing the website at the same time?

I would be grateful if anyone could enlighten me on this or even tell me where to look it up

You can create an asp application with an access backend (for a light-duty site). All others would need is an internet connection and username/password. As for concurrent users, you'd have to make sure your code takes that into account. Get the Best Answers! faq333-2924

You might want to check out using Access' Data Access Pages. They allow you to display and edit data provided either by Jet or by SQL Server, in the context of a Web page. However, the user must have Office installed since Data Access Pages use ActiveX controls.

If you decide to go this route, I would recommend the following book (esp. Chapters 10 and 11):

Why not use Active Server Pages???

I've got an MS Access database that is accessed by users separated by over 100 miles, its servered up via the www. The speed is usually okay as they have good connections. Only problem you may have is producing access reports on the fly but if you're after showing figures etc you can do create basic reports in ASP.....

That way all your users would need would be internet explorer.

I would recommend against Active Data Pages and ASP. They are both, technically speaking, dead letters.

ASP.NET is the new internet engine for databases, and Access is readily accomadated.

Thats a good point, asp.net is better than asp.... I justa in't got around to learning it yet!

vanilla: Buy ya a couple of books - many have ASP -> ASP.NET chapters, transferring is not that bad, and once you're on dot NET, its all VB (or C++). Many of the problems programmers had with ASP are no longer a problem in dot NET. Good Luck!
