I have this shutdown problem with an acer aspire 5720. It keeps shutting down periodically and for no apparent reason. I tried it wihtou the battery and with only the battery. I have removed each one of the memory chips but it still happens. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem before.

Start off by having a look in the BIOS for a temperature setting. Perhaps its on too low a setting.
Make sure all your operating system updates are current. While it is difficult to say for certain, I would have thought if it was a memory chip, it would freeze / crash, not power down. Have a look at the Event log and see if there is something there. If it does it regularly try running in safe mode and see if it still does it - that might give some indication as to a hardware/software issue.
