I recently purchased and installed Veritas 9, along with the Exchange agent, to back up my servers. I am able to back up the Information Store, but when I try and select either the Public Folders or Mailboxes I am told my account is denied access due to lack of permissions.

From what I can tell the account has sufficient privs and can do everything else in the back up. Can someone give me some tips or tell me what privs or where these privs need to be applied in order for me to back up the mailboxes individually?

Thanks,

Mike

I am trying to get an answer to this EXACT question as well. I have even edited the registry to allow security tabs in the Exchange System Manager at the top level object and I have added the system admin account with all access, as well as a user named "bexec" which has a mailbox.

What is the answer to this? Is it enough just to backup the information store, or do I need to backup up the IS and the mailboxes/public folders?

I believe the's an explicit deny for "send as" and "receive as" for the admins group. These permissions are needed to log onto another mailbox.

Normally, doing an online of the IS is sufficient. In the event of a failure, restore to a recovery server and export what you need. Some people spend inordinate amounts of time and resources backing up individual mailboxes in addition to backing up the stores. These Brick level Backups, allow a single mailbox to be restored easily, but are arguable unnecessary. Simple set deleted item and deleted mailbox retention to a reasonable number of days for your environment.

If you really must, go to and buy a copy of power controls. Cool tool.
