Just wondering if it is possible to create the same profile on XP as is on 2000 on the same machine (by registry tweaking or other method).
A user wants to access the same programs on his dual-boot machine but cannot run them due to profile incompatiability.

Is this achievable?

Thanks.

Any takers on this one? I've read that xp is built on 2000 technology but doesnt seem to allow programs to be accessed (office programs for example).

More information please.

Eg, are the apps in question installed on both systems? Because if they are not (office particularly), it won't work. Ie, its no good installing all apps on one o/s and expecting them just to work when you boot the other. You can install into the same locations (eg, under C:\program files), with the same options (so when second overwrites first, actual files installed the same) - this will then set up correct system file & registry entries so should work in both o/s.

As to profiles - you could try copying a 2k profile to XP (I've never tried it) - but as you've got to reinstall apps anyway, may as well just create new profile in XP.

Hey Wooluf,
I think you have covered what I wanted to know, I was wondering if applications that were installed on 2000 initially could be run by XP without having to re-install the programs again.

What threw me was the fact that office applications were looking for the installer (like it does if you have a 2nd user on windows 2000 setting up office on the same machine) so i thought i could bypass re-installation.

so much for that thought !!

I suspect there is no point in trying to take over profiles, i havent come across any docs on how to try this, it possibly cant be done.

thanks for your help.
