Accessing Win2k Default/Hidden Share 1

Just an unusual problem I have been trying to figure out.. Any help or thoughts would be appreciated..

We are running win2k AD, along with several w2k servers. On one server I am unable to access the Hidden Admin shares (c$, d$ etc), all others are ok. On this particular server it prompts for user/password when I try to access it. One of my colleagues can access it however. Comparing accounts, the only major difference I can spot is that he is setup as a enterprise admin, where I am only setup as domain admin. I can add Enterprise admin to my account but I would like to try and figure out why this is happening.

Tried so far..

Delete the hidden share and recreate it – right back to the same problem
Check event logs on both client and server – nothing reported regarding this issue

Any thoughts?

Many thanks in advance,

Mike

Where is this server located - outside of the domain you have access to?

You could have 2 domains that are connected thus making it a enterprise.

Thanks for the reply shaggy...

I should have provide a bit more detail. Where sitting in a single forest, single domain.. Its also a single IP Subnet in a switched enviroment....

For testing I have update my account to have Enterprise admin and I still cannot access the hidden share..

Any thoughts anyone?

Thanks,

Mike

I don't want to seem like I'am assuming you are a dummy and I am positive someone with your skills have check these areas, but I need to know as I go down the troubleshooting list on what could be happening. So if you bear with me during these questions we can get to the bottom of the problem

1. Did you reboot after you assigned yoursele to enterprise admin

2. Did you check the security settings on the C$ of the server you cannot see?
Make sure you have not been added or a group you belong to hasn't been added (NTFS gets the most restricted )

3. Have you tried recreating your account?

No worries about insulting me. posting these type of questions can always be tricky... Anyways to answer your questions...

1) Reboot has occured, also tried on another admin as well in the same position...
2) I have checked the setting on the drives in question.. The share settings are not available as its an administrative share, the security settingings in this case is set to everyone full access
3) I have not recreated the account but I suppose its worth a try for testing..

We have several admin accounts. Only 2 of them appear to be having a problem. Adding the Enterprise admin did not seem to help. It seems to be specific to this one member server however, as other member servers work fine.. Not a huge deal just want to figure it out!

many thanks!

Mike

Was this server added after your account was made?

Hey Shaggy... Yes the account is older then the server in this case...

Still not sure of the root cause of the problem but I was able to solve it. I ended up removing the account from the Domain Admins, rebooting and logging in. Add the account again to the Domain admins, rebooting and everything worked.

Dumb and stupid... Nothing like wasting half a day on trivial issues like this!

Many thanks to all for there efforts!

Mike

Glad to hear it Mike

It seems to me (just speculating) that the new server was acting like the old user account was corrupted (or some policy was placed against it)

Who knows - if your like me I am constinatly messing up my account as I try something new. Sometimes I don't even know its messed up until I try something simple like you did

anyway glad to hear it

Was sort of my guess as well. The accounts in question with the problem are some of the oldest we have in the domain, including a migration from NT to 2k. It was a minor problem, and actual became visable through a CRM problem rather then trying to access the server.. I tracked it back to the admin shares as the cause of CRM.. Anyways its done!

Many thanks... Not sure if a star should be use in this case...

are you a local admin on the box that is trying to access the server's admin share?

Hey Cfont..

Problems is licked in this case...

But The accounts are memebers of the Domain Admin which is added to the local admin account on all member computers..

Mike

ok. thanks. i'm running down another question about admin shares and have seemed to narrow it down to local admin permissions on the client attempting to access the admin share... maybe... so i thought i'd put in my cent (not really worth 2 i don't think ;-))

2 cents, or be it 1 there all appreciated.. Its help from everyone that keeps this place going and helps us all over the hurdles of the IT thing we do..
