Hi Everyone,

I need to create a ODBC DSN from my computer to a SQL Server on a different machine on the same network. But everytime I try I get the following error:

connection failed:
SQLState: '01000'
SQL Server Error: 10060
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Drvier][TCP/IP Sockets]ConnectionOPen (connect()).
Connection failed:
SQLState: '08001'
SQL Server Error: 17
[Microsoft][ODBC SQl Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

I have configured the firewall to accept SQL traffic, but I still recieve the error. Can anyone help please.

Do you have an account on the SQL Server you are trying to access?

Can you PING the SQL Server by name?
If you can't, then you need to set up your ODBC connection using the IP address and not the SQL Server name.

Thanks so much for your quick reply SQLBill. I have tried setting up the DSN with both the computer name and the IP address. Neither of which work unfortunatly.

Thanks again

Nick.

Yes, but can you ping the machine by either name or IP address.

If you can ping the machine can you telnet to port 1433 on that machine?

Take a look at this FAQ faq962-5481 and provide the answers to the questions asked.

Also, you never answered the question: Do you have an account on SQL Server? Not on the computer/server itself, but in SQL Server.

I have just gone onto my server, deleted all of the dsn's and all of the SQL server users and started from scratch. And with a bit of playing around with the permissions (really I dont know how I have done it! :) ) But it now works!!!!

Thank you so much to everyone that has helped with this post, you are all life savers!!

Thanks again

Nick
