Hi I have a strange & frustrating problem with my network (win 2k server sp4, users run 2000 or xp).
Users can logon, get a valid ip address, and can ping the server. However they cannot access any shared drives on the network, nor any network printer. Then on 2 or 3 machines (out of 10) after about 30 mins or more they can magically access the shares (but not the printers).
On the server, opening active directory gives the error “Naming information cannot be located becase the server is not operational.”
Disk space is ok, no viruses found.

I’d greatly appreciate any help.
Thanks in advance, Alistair.

I'm getting DHCP error 1051 and MRXsmb error 3019 in event viewer, if that helps anyone.
Thanks,
Alistair.

albevo,

It appears that you have problems with your Domain/Trust. Locate ADS Sites & Domain - delete the exisiting and create new. This does not affect your actual DNS settings but re-integrates the ADS with yours exisiting DNS infrastructure.

How is your DNS configured?

Here is a logon script (logon.bat) for your info:

echo off
cls
NET TIME \\ABC-FS1\ /SET /YES
NET USE G: \\ABC-FS1\APPS /YES (shared APPS at root of drive
NET USE U: \\ABC-FS1\USERS /YES
NET USE LPT1 \\MCVS-FS1\PRINTER*

*Assumes that you're using Shared Windows Printing.

Hope this helps...

Let me know how you get on...

You can also try to see if your client machine will resolve FQDN on your domain. i.e

ping mypc.mydomain.com (is this OK?)

Thanks

Thanks very much for your suggestions and help. The problem was with a faulty dsl modem/firewall which was interfearing with network traffic.
Thanks anyway.
Alistair.
