Hi

My boss thinks I know everything but I know bog all... so I need help from some experts.

We have Exchange on our server and a firewall with VPN to access it remotely, my boss wants to access the server remotely and download his mail directly into outlook on his home machine, is this possible? if so how?

Thanks kindly

Gary

You will need to look at Outlook Web Agent. You should be able to find how to install this componeent of Exhange on either the distribution CD or the Microsoft Web Site.

This should be very doable. Essentially, you've got two choices.

As ChrisRAnthony points out, you can install and enable web access to the Exchange server. I always found the web client to be a little clunky and limiting in what you were able to do but if his needs are not great, it may work for you.

If you've got a VPN established, you can also provide direct access to the Exchange server. A Virtual Private Network (VPN) allows remote users to function as if they werre in the office on the LAN. Your boss will need to install whatever VPN client software goes along with what you are running in the office. He will also need to load the email client app. If you are running Exchange, I guess that will be Outlook. He will need to configure his internet access method and the VPN client to provide DNS, WINS and whatever other services are available.

If you provide specifics on what you are running, we can provide more detailed guidance.

Hope that helps.

For those who'd prefer to just POP3 and SMTP their mail from an exchange server there are a few pieces of information you need.

The domain name or IP address of the email server. With VPN I'm not sure how this would work.

But login names on it are as follows:
domain/domain_user_name/Mail_Alias

So for me it's 39S22A/kd1s/TPelliccio - that's the POP3 user name.

Hope that helps.
