Accessing local shares when disconnected from network

Laptop XP sp2
Need to be able to use UNC address for folder shared on the laptop's local drive. Works perfectly while a network connection is active, but when working stand-alone, error message "Network path not found". Turn wireless back on, can see local shares again. Tried adding <computername> 127.0.0.1 to Hosts file. Using explicit <drive:><\path> unfortunately isn't an option. Any guidance appreciated - have exhausted 8 hrs worth of failed attempts.

It occured to me that because you are using SP2, you should also apply:

WOW! Perfect! Installing Loopback adapter took care of it and did exactly what I wanted. Wish I'd posted the question sooner!
