Hello all, this is my first post so lets see how i go.

We currently have a windows NT4 domain with an exchange 5.5 server

I am in the process of setting up a new domain (2000 active directory) and i'm wondering if users are able to gain access to the exchange 5.5 server in the NT4 domain when they are authenticated on the new 2k domain?

I would like to gradually move users to the new domain with the knowledge that they will still be able to access their emails no matter which domain they are logging into?

If you require any further info then please let me know

Cheers,
Steve

Some ideas for you Steve.
My setup is as follows in a school enviroment: 3 Servers. Domain 1 (Curriculum) - PDC and BDC with NT4 Proxy server and Exchange 5.5 on the BDC.
Domain 2 (Admin) - This is a Windows 2000 server.
All students and staff are users on Domain 1 with staff having emails. Admin staff/senior teachers are also members of Domain 2 and we have one way trusts between both domains. Members of domain 2 can access their userareas on domain 1 and emails. Permissions need to be set to allow rights.
Emails: Admin user's emails are set in email properties PRIMARY WINDOWS ACCOUNT - Domain 2 whereas other users it would be set as - Domain 1

Confused? sorry but it may get you thinking.

The one request I have had and as yet it seems impossible is to have emails accessible from both domains. Any ideas?

Regards

Hi Patrick,

I nearly slapped my own forehead on friday when the penny dropped. What i did was the following:

1) create a new user account in the win2k domain (for the user who is currently authenticating in the NT4 domain)

2) open exchange administrator on the exchange server and give user permissions to their mailbox for the new account in the win2k domain)

nb: assuming that you have already set up the required trusts

Now when the user authenticates in the new domain, they will be able to configure their web client to open their mailbox which is still being provided by the 5.5 server in the NT4 domain

Now i just need to work out how to migrate the mailboxes from the 5.5 server in the NT4 domain to the new Exchange 2000 server in the Win2k domain

*sigh*
