accessing another mounted partition with apache?

hello, im having trouble getting apache2 to read/write (via php) to a custom directory /var/

http://www/files/,

which is mounted on another partition than the one apache resides on, ive made it world writeable but still no luck. can anyone offer some insight on this?

Is the [tt]open_basedir[/tt] directive set in your php.ini file ?

no its not set, but id like to mention the partition resides on a different physical drive, if that is important.
