We have a very simple five PC peer-to-peer network all running Win98SE that has been working fine. Formatted one PC and installed Win2K Pro on it. All PC's are part of WORKGROUP, and I tried to make all network settings on the Win2K PC the same as the rest. I "shared" the My Documents folder on Win2K PC (computer name is "Doug" and allowed full access.
However, no matter how I try to access the Win 2K PC from any of the Win98SE machines, I get a dialog box called "Enter Network Password". It says the "resource name is "\\DOUG\IPC$" and asks for a password. I have tried every password associated with either user or PC, and I always get the "password is incorrect" response. However, the Win2K PC can access all the Win98 PC's.
I found that IPC$ is an administrative share and cannot be modified. Is there something special required to allow access by a Win9X machine? HELP!
