We have a very simple five PC peer-to-peer network all running Win98SE that has been working fine. Formatted one PC and installed Win2K Pro on it. All PC's are part of WORKGROUP, and I tried to make all network settings on the Win2K PC the same as the rest. I "shared" the My Documents folder on Win2K PC (computer name is "Doug") and allowed full access.

However, no matter how I try to access the Win 2K PC from any of the Win98SE machines, I get a dialog box called "Enter Network Password". It says the "resource name is "\\DOUG\IPC$" and asks for a password. I have tried every password associated with either user or PC, and I always get the "password is incorrect" response. However, the Win2K PC can access all the Win98 PC's.

I found that IPC$ is an administrative share and cannot be modified. Is there something special required to allow access by a Win9X machine? HELP!

Everyone needs to have access rights to the Win2K machine. From the Administrator Tools, select Computer Management, then Local Users and Groups and Groups to setup new accounts for each machine/user. I would estimate that you do not use passwords on your existing network, which may be fine if you don't access the outside world (even the internet). I would advise having all the pc's use a password for windows access and then setup the 2K machine with the same user/password as the win98 machines. You can then decide what kind of access each computer has from selecting from the different types of users.

techshoot is correct. ut if you are not worried about security and you are using a dial up modem (No cable or dsl) then you can enable the guest account on the Win2K machine. If you are running a firewall in combo with cable or dsl THEN you can use enable the guest account. Again this is ONLY if you are not worried about security.) James Collins
