I've recently distributed an access 2000 project which connects to a SQL Server 7 database. The users are reporting occasional machine lock ups. I've witnessed it happen a couple of times and the access project appears to freeze when a form with a SQL data source is either opened or closed. Its not possible to kill the task when it happens, a reboot is always required. As I said, its occassional, I can open and close the forms which have frozen 100 times without it happening, I thought it might be a lack of RAM but its happened on new machines with 128MB.

Can someone help me out in fixing this, I suspect a configuration setting is out somewhere, maybe where the connection is defined. I'll be glad to post any settings which might be relevant.

Hi...

I am wondering what other problems you have had with connecting Access to SQL Server 7. I will have to make a decision with the week on whether to modify a clients Access 2000 app to SQL Server 2000, or to continue it on in Access.

How do you link to the SQL Server DB?

All comments appreciated...

Access 2000 lets you create data projects (.adp as opposed to .mdb) where you define your connection to SQL server, it takes a matter of seconds to set up.

I've found some info which suggests the lock ups are down to a bug in access, I may have to wait for a fix from microsoft. Apart from this problem I cant recommend the access/sql combo highly enough. SQL server is magnificent for handling large amounts of data and users and development times are extremely rapid using access as the front end.
