Hi,

We have a middleware application running under Solaris 8 that monitors new entries written to a Windows NT file. Our Unix administrator make the connection through Samba which was running in a Red Head Linux box. Everything runs fine for the first 10-15 minutes. After that our middleware application could not see any new entry written to the NT file, althought new entries were still visible to simple file editor such as vi. After about one hour, we were not able to connect to the NT file anymore (ie. even vi cannot see the content of the file. All we can see is the filename only! Our Unix administrator said that the connection drops due to some problem between the Linux and the Solaris box.

Has anyone out there experienced the same situation? What I cannot understand is that Samba has to be set up in a separate Linux box. I have heard great things about Samba and Unix, but how come they cannot co-exist in the same box? Would it be a problem if I insist our Unix administrator to install another copy of Samba in the same Solaris box. Would such a cofiguration help??

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
MadDoberman.

Hi,

Yes samba does work on the Solaris. However your unix admin might be finding it easy to install that on linux or maybe your solaris version is older which does not support Samaba.
So plz provide the samba version and solaris OS version so that we can find out if it is compatible to install.

Hello NavinB,

Our Unix administrator is away this week and not being a Unix person, I can't find out the version of Samba. However, when I logon to the Solaris box through Telnet, it came back with SunOS 5.8 and I believe it is the same as Solaris 8 (I could be wrong!). Is there a easy way to find out the version of Samba?

I am also quoting part of the email that our Unix Administrator send me regarding the problem that I am having as follows. Hope it will help.

" ...... as I told you yesterday, SAMBA operates differently on different flavours of UNIX. on LINUX it allows direct mounting of NT files. on Solaris SMBCLIENT is all you get."

Could the problem be on mounting NT files, SMBCLIENT, or something completely different?

Thank you very much,
MadDoberman.

Hi,

U are right that your OS version is 5.8.For Samba version u can get the info either by using the cmd (pkginfo -l samba) or go to the installation directory(This will probably show the samba version i.e /opt/samba2.2.0 means samba2.2.0 version)
This was the version I installed on Sol 8 and it worked fine....
I hope this helps.....

Hi NavinB,

Thanks for the help. Someone finally showed me that the SMBCLIENT in the Solaris box is of version 2.20. I presume that is also the version for Samba.

Our Unix administrator should be back now and I would have another discussion with him to find out more detail. In the mean time, thanks again. Once I got this resolved, I will update you on this subject.

Thank you very much,
BHo.
