I have an Access 97 database(actually 2, cause it has been split) that I need to convert to 2000 and clean up some bugs. I have tried to create a new empty 2000 db and import into/export from old, in attempt to get all of the objects. I keep running into permission problems. The old db only has the default user and groups created by Access 97(user=Admin, groups=Admins & Users). My fear is that there is a workgroup information file involved that was not sent along with the dbs. Is there a way to clear all permissions from this or any Access 97 db? All I want is to get my hands on the objects, make the changes I need to make and restore the db to a working status. Thanks in advance for your help. wfw

Try converting the database instead. I don't know, but I would guess that you can't just import the objects.

In addition, you should work out the bugs first, as this will make the conversion less painful.

Also, you might try de securing the database.

I tried it, the back end converted just fine. The front end hit me with "no permission to convert this database", immediately. When you look at the permissions, all of the object owners are coming up "unknown". The user "Admin" has no rights, which goes against everything I have ever read dealing with default security when you create an Access 97 database. If you do not secure your database, anyone that signs on will have access to everything. There has got to be a way to wipe it all clean so that you can get your hands on this stuff. Thanks for trying. wfw

Have you taken a look at the security faq for their recommendations on how to de-secure a database? There's a copy on my website, if you're interested.

I have tried the wizard, I get "no permission to import/export". It does state that in order to de-secure, that you must be a user in the "Admins" group within the workgroup information file that the db is secured with. This is very frustrating. Back to the drawing board. wfw

There are several security utilities that are for sale that may help you reset the permissions.

Elmsoft ( has one for $30 U.S.

I haven't found any freeware that would help.

Good luck!

I don't need password recovery software, I already have access to one of those. I need something to run through an Access database and simply remove all of the permissions. It would be nice if it would return it to a db with default security. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll keep looking. wfw

It is possible that your MDW does NOT contain an user with administrator rights.
This means that the developer of the application has completely applied the "double-MDW" security improvement I always recommend.

If you do not get hold of a MDW that contains a real administrator (or the codes that where used to create him/them) then you will simply not be able to un-secure the MDB and you will have to stay with the A97 version.
