Access Runtime quits at startup without an error msg

I have an Access XP database (and related files) that I distribute in a package which includes the Access XP Runtime files. (Only the minimal RT files are included though, approx. 32 MB). Most of my users do not experience any problems, but a small number (about 5 or 10%) are unable to open the database after installation. All of these users also have Office 2003 (and Access 2003) installed. When they click on the icon to open the database in Access RT XP, a dialog says "...configuring Access...", but when the dialog disappears, nothing else happens. I have not been able to duplicate the problem on my test computers. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Since the Access runtimes do not provide much in the way of error handling, this is a tough area to troubleshoot. I ran into something similar and I installed a full version of Access on one of the trouble machines, ran the application to be able to get error handling info, then uninstalled Access when I was done.

I found most of the issues I was running into were Windows or SQL permissions...the user either did not have write access to the folder where the Access database resided (to be able to create the .ldb file or save data to the .mdb) or they did not have db_datawriter Access to the SQL database the user was trying to write the data to.

Try to open your app directly from access 2003 and you might find the solution there.

Thanks mstrmage and hermanlaksko, I should mention that there appear to be no problems with running the database in Access 2003. This would be okay except that it requires the user to modify all the shortcuts to point to Access 03 (and that's a challenge for some of them), and the user also has to deal with several security messages that 03 provides. That is one of the reasons why I have been distributing the database using Access XP runtime instead. If the same database can be opened in Access 03, I wouldn't think it is a permissions problem, but I may be wrong. It is also difficult to test since my users are in different parts of the country and I don't have access to their machines to troubleshoot. Any other insight is appreciated.

Normally when I set up an app to run via the runtime, the shortcut needs to include the path to the runtime exe file then the MDB or MDE file as a parameter, for example:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\Runtime\msaccsrt.exe" "\\server\share\file.mdb"

(I don't currently have access to it, so you will need to change the path as appropriate).
