Whenever I try to renew the ip address on a machine, I get an error saying "Access Denied"...although I have full rights etc...there is so much spyware and junk on here that I'm sure it's been hyjacked in some way. Anyone know a way around this? Here is the exact error.

"An error occured while renewing interface local area connection: Access Denied"

I tried the winsock fix and re-installing the TCP/IP stack and still nothing. I can set it manually to move data to blow it away and reinstall windows...but I was just curious how to fix it...so any ideas?

This is not per se a Winsock stack or TCP/IP stack issue.

. Did you do an ipconfig /release first?
. It is possible you are missing a group membership, even if Administrator: . In most cases this error is thrown because XP treats a network adapter connection as a dedicated interface, and denies access if it believes the connection is in use. Often waiting a few minutes allows the operation to succeed. In the alternative:

. right-click the connection and disable it
. right-click the connection and enable it
. right-click the connection and Repair

oops sorry this is WinXP Home Edition so going into the users/groups MMC is not an option. Also I did try to do the ipconfig /release and then /renew but no success. I also tried to right click disable, enable, then repair and no go. This PC is a mess so I'm going to reinstall windows, but would be nice to figure this out.

The only three other possibilities:

. You are missing an ACE privilige. I have seen OEM XP Home additions that ship missing critical ACE priviliges and have reported this to Microsoft. In XP Pro you can use secpol.msc to fix the priviliges; in XP Home you have to use the resource kit utility NTRIGHTS.EXE:
. Some third-party firewall software will do this. McAfee is often mentioned. You need to stop the firewall with Task Manager in order to do an ipconfig /renew

. One of your malwares has locked the registry keys written during a renewal. Use regedit and right-click effected keys and check the Permissions for the user:

ok I have formatted and reinstalled WinXP Pro on here and I still have the same problem. There is no firewall software or antivirus software installed...it's a fresh install and I turned off the XP firewall. I checked the permissions on those keys you mentioned above and they seem to be fine...the "administrators" group has full control on all of them, and the user in question is part of the administrators group. I have taken a look at the ACE priviliges...nothing seems unusual...is there some in specific you can think of?

ok when I check the events there is a system error

DHCP event 1002

The IP address lease 0.0.0.0 for the network card with network address 0007Exxxxxx has been denied by the DHCP server 192.168.1.1 (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message)

does this help?

Hi FroggyJ,

I encountered this same problem today. Here is how I fixed it.

Check your DHCP log on the DHCP server. By default it is in c:\winnt\system32\dhcp. You should see log names like "DhcpSrvLog-Sun.log". Open up the one from the day you were having the issue (if it was within the last seven days) and check to see if the machine name or IP address of the problem system is in the logs (it probably is many times). If so, write down the IP from the logs that it was trying to get and check your DHCP reservations to see if it is in there. There is probably and entry for that IP address that says "Bad Address". Simply delete this reservation and VOILA. It's all good. This worked for me. Hopefully it works for you.

Thanks,
Mark
