Few days ago I started getting this error message upon accessng shared folders: Access denied: target name is incorrect, on windows 2000 network. It does not affect all of the users, only few of them, and after 3-4 logon it works ok- but through out the day someone has this problem for a certain period of time. If I logon on the pc with this error with admin credentials, I would also get the same message, access denied, whereas if I logon to the pc next to it – works fine. Of course after of few restarts, it works again. Now I am getting more and more people complaining about this, which also affects their ability to print, or use any of the shared resources on that server. Also there was a case that a user would get access denied while logged on, and after 20 minutes he would click on the shared drive and it would work just fine
I have shared folders on another 2000 server and I do not have any issues with the permissions, nor with access. Since both of the servers are built at the same time, and been updated with the same updates and service packs, I am at lost here.

I forgot to mentions that all of the servers are Windows 2000 and all of the clients are Windows XP pro

It sounds like a licensing issue. Check the system log in event viewer on the servers to see if there are any notes about licenses. You might need to buy another CAL pack from a supplier.

Also having the same problem... I have figured it to be a SDC givine bad permissions. in a CMD prompt type "set" and look for logon server; see if the errors have something in common with a logon server, and that should help you in the right direction... if you figure it out completely let me know i am also still trying to figure it out.

The licences are ok so it is not the problem there...

What you are describing sounds like either a conflict between two DNS servers or two domain controllers. A client PC is willing to accept DNS information from the first DNS server that responds or log into the first domain controller that responds. If you have a fairly busy network and have more than one DNS or DC, they will be sharing the load. If one of them has a problem then sometimes you can log on fine, sometimes not (depending on which server you are going to).

But if that is the case it would affect all of the shared folders on all the servers servers right? All the shares on the other server are always accessible ..or it wouldn't

anyway forgot to thank you all for answering and giving suggestions
