We use the Universal TCP/IP Network Bootdisk to log on to Windows 2003 servers to Ghost computers. I have set up a Windows 2008 Standard server to use for this function but we get Access Denied when we try to log on to it. I have all of the share and NTFS permissions set to Full Control for the Everyone group and I have added the users that we would normally use to log on with these same permissions to the shared folder. I saw somewhere that it is possibly the Junction Points in Server 2008 that are causing the problem. Of course Microsoft has nothing on this problem (it is not their problem even though they have caused it).

Thanks, Ted

Its not clear exactly what you are trying to do... can you be more specific?

One thing I noticed with Windows 2008 is that remotely you need to specify the domain name or machine with the username

i.e.

username = domain1\bobsmith
username = machinename\bobsmith

instead of just typing bobsmith

also check the security logs on the Windows 2008 server to see if the authentication request is being tried. It might give you the exact reason for the denied response.

Firewall on?

Hi Joseph, thanks for the tips. I have just about decided that I must go back to Server 2003 to do this job. The boot disk is running Linux to set up a TCP/IP connection to the server, this works just fine on 2003 but does not seem to work on 2008. I am using a non-domain user (a local admin user) to log onto the server, I just tried logging on as you advised with the domain logon ie ads\tmm00is and my domain password but I still got the access denied message.
I sent an email to the gentleman who created the boot disk at maybe he will come up with something.

Thanks, Ted

oh I think I get it now... you boot a remote desktop or server to this boot disk...

the booted device now needs to connect back to a server (the windows 2008 server) to get more information and some "something". It requires credentials to connect...

1) check the event viewer on the Windows 2008 server to see if there are any events being logged in the Security log.

2) Turn off the Windows 2008 firewall (if on)

3) Check the security policy

Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options:

Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level - SET TO SEND LM & NTLM - USE NTLM v2 IF NEGOTIATED

Well that's about it. I just checked both of your suggestions, there are no issues in Event Viewer and the setting in Security Policy is already set as you suggest. I am beginning to think that Bill G. just likes to mess with our minds on this stuff! He should stick with playing with his money and let someone else do the productive work.
I need to get back to my work, I have over 100 computers to Ghost and put on the network.

Thanks, again for the help.
