hi everyone,

I'm working on my first access database and I need to document it for others (I will not be maintaining it). I was wondering if anyone could offer any info on access specific information I should definitly include in the report.

Has anyone come across a database devolped by someone else and wished they had explained 'x' specific part?

Thanks for your time,

dan

Dan,

I have done this more times than I can count. I had one that was so bad, I wrote an Access database documenter addin that doesn't display it as nearly as detailed as the built in documenter, but writes it out to HTML. It took less time to write the documenter and look at its reports than it would have taken me to sort through everything manually.

If you want to take a look it is available from (this has not been tested on any version except 97).

oh wow thats a time saver.

Do you mind if i use it to help with my documentation? (I'll reference the addin)

Thanks alot for the post.

I don't mind at all - that's why its available as a free download. If you find it works on Access 2K or XP though, please let me know as I haven't had any nearly as complex databases to test it with.

jrbarnett,

Just for your info,

I had the chance to try your documenter addin on an access xp database.

The Access xp addin manager would not let me load it as "it was designed for a previous version of access."

Thanks again for the tip, it saved me a lot of time.

I suppose I should try and convert it to 2000/XP now that support for 97 has been discontinued. When I have a few minutes to convert and retest it I will do so.
