I want to create a table with various part numbers and other data that I can use as a pull down list to create a bill of materials of all the parts needed on a specific project. However, if a part is not in my master library of parts, I would like to be able to type in the information into my BOM and also have my master parts table updated with the new part info. This will grow my master parts table making data entry much easier with each new job.

Can I do this in a single step or do I need to type the info into the master list and then select it from my pull down menu?

Thanks for the help,

Greg

Hi,

Why would you not have all part id's in your part master? It is classic database design to use what is called referential integrity.

The way that a well designed database works, it will prevent data from beind entered in you BOM if it has not been entered in the Part Master.

There are an unlimited number of potential parts that could be required for a project. I plan on starting off with a fairly large database of the most used components. I know that as we continue to use this system, different parts will be needed. I know I could add the new part directly into the master library and then select it for the specific job. I was hoping the master list could be made to understand when a new part was entered on a job and automatically learn this new item and add it to the master list for the next time it is needed. This saves a step and makes the whole system self learning.

Is this possible or am I asking too much of Access?

THAT takes some programming, like...
Code:
If [Exists in master] is FALSE then
go ahead, update the data in the master and make sure that all the required data is included as well
end if
 update the bom
However, it is also a shortcut that could allow garbage to be entered into your db.

You might want to post in one of the many MS Access forums and get application specific answers.
