I have a question about using ms access to connect to a mysql databased. This may be very elementry, but please be patient, as we have just made a switch to mysql.

I am a custom to using access as my day to day data processing tool for databases that we have connected to various web applications. In the past we had always connected to a ms access database through odbc connection with our application server (cold fusion server).

We have recently decided to move out of access as our database program for web applications and use mysql. Problem is that I would like to continue to use access as my interface in working with the database. I will need to do queries, delete records, sort, possibly import and export, etc.

I currently have a mysql interface, dbtools, which is basically sql query building application and is not suited for data processing. I have had success connecting to the mysql data base (odbc mysql)in access but have been have been generating errors and access problems. At best, it seems to be quirky.

Question:

Is there a way to set up access to work with mysql and retain must of the access funtions and capabilities?

Is there any other options available or another help resource I should inspect?

Thanks in advance.

dforkin,

You need to have the ODBC driver for mySQL installed on your PC. Once this is done, Access should talk to your mySQL databases happily.

Is there a specific driver version that is optimal.

another question:

when setting up the odbc, there is a section with 18 check boxes. this section is called "options that effect the behavior of myodbc".

Should all of these, none of these be checked?

What are the implications.

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

when opening in access, a lock file 9 is created.

Could this cause any problems.

MySQL has some tips for using Access as a front end. It is best to go to MySQL's website and actually "READ" the documentation. I never like reading manuals, but found that most of my questions were answered from the manual. It is good.

We are also getting away from Access as a front end, and are using MySQL as a backend along with VB and PHP as front ends. It is way better!
