I was just playing with setting up security for my database, I followed the instructions that are in the FAQ but now my computer is the only one that requires a password to get into the database. All the other computers can still access the database without requiring a password. Also my computer requires a password not only for the database I set security up on but also my other database that I did not want secured. So basically Im very confused as to how to make access security work so if any of you have and ideas id appreciate it. thanks.

You need to activate the use of the workgroupfile on those computers as well.
This has shown to be the most irritating part of this. Why? Because you need to do it for every user on every machine (at least on an NT). If you have an NT environment, I can show you how to get around this at startup through the logon script.

Well Im a little confused as to what the point is of securing a database if any computer that doesnt have the workgroup file setup can open it. Even if I set the workgroup file up on every workstation someone could still copy the database and open it from their home computer that doesnt have the workgroup file setup.

Well I may just not worry about it, I figure if I disable the shift key that should be good enough to keep users from going in a doing things they arent supposed to.

I've got several databases running on a shared drive at work. To secure them, I follow these steps:

1. Create a new workgroup information file. There's a program to create this in the directory that holds your access program files.

2. Join the new workgroup. (Not System.mdw)

3. Create a new user name, and put that user in the "Admins" group.

4. Remove the default "Admin" user from the "Admins" group (leave "Admin" in the "Users" group). This is the default user for those who don't belong to your workgroup.

5. Run the User-Level Security Wizard to create a secure copy of your database.

6. Look under "Tools - Security" to set permisions for various objects for each user and/or group.

I should point out, I've done this in Access 97, but I think it's the same in 2000.

I don't think this security is easy to defeat.

Hope that helps

Does what you've done work in Access 97 on an NT Server for a database that is constantly being up-dated?
I'm havin terrible after following those steps from an earlier thread - in that only one person can open the d/b at a time and I cant open the User / Groups Accounts section to make changes. The options are shaded so they can't be altered

I'm not sure what your problem is, but it sounds like you aren't logged on as an "Admin" user - you don't have permission to do what you're trying to do. It's possible you may not be listed as the Owner of the database (or object).

Also, check to make sure that you don't have a shortcut to the database that opens it in exclusive mode. That would stop someone else from opening it up.

I've had a little trouble with Linked files - only one person at a time can access them in some cases.
