I have just finished installing Office 2003 (including Access 2003) on an XP_Home system and I find in the Get data Import File dialogue that there is no option to import from a CSV or TXT type file. The only available supported file types are:

Microsoft Office Access mdb; mda etc.
Windows SharePoint Services()
ODBC Databases()

If I select ODBC a Data Seletion dialogue opens in which I can see a reference to "Text Files(not shareable).dsn" but if I try to select it I end up with an error message Error 3423: "You cannot use ODBC to import from, export to, or link an external Microsoft Access or ISAM database table to your database."

Any thoughts please?

I checked the system ODBC Data Source Administrator and there is a reference under the Drivers tab for:
Microsoft Text Driver(*.txt;*.csv) version 4.00.6304.00

The ODBC data drivers aren't related to the Access import/export options. I can't be 100% positive however when I had this issue once, it was an installation issue. I had chosen default or something I think.

Further info...

I have come to the conclusion that the Microsoft registry is out of wack. Previously I was running Access 97 on this machine, with no problems but I had XP remove Office 97 before installing the new 2003 version. The MSOffice 2003 installer asks whether it should remove previous versions so I am wondering the prior removal of Office 97 has prevented A2003 from re-writing the correct registry keys and possiblly removing the earlier version entries.

When this happened to me, it was because the 'text file' odbc driver was not installed when Access was installed. I think I had to re-install Access using the 'be specific' option (rather than the default) and specifically install the text odbc driver.
