I am using Windows 2000 and I already have Access 2000 installed (the Office 2000 package).

I tried installing Access 97 (from the Office 97 package) with Access 2000 by following the guide written by Microsoft. The problem is that all of the data for Access 97 installs (Word, Excel 97 etc as well) but not the actual executable to get the Access program running.

I then uninstalled Office 2000 and installed Access 97 again but again the executable wasn't there.

I'm at a loss what to do really. I need Access 97 as all of my users are on that version. The only thing I can think of is reformatting the drive and splitting it so that I can put Win 98 and Win 2000 dual boot (as I have done at home successfully with Win 98 and Win XP) with 97 and one and 2000 on the other.

I didn't really want to do that though as it's the work desktop PC, not mine....

Thanks for listening...

Try this:

Find the existing version of the Msaccess.exe file, and then rename it to Msaccess.2k. Before you rename it, confirm that the version of the Msaccess.exe file is 9.0x by right-clicking the file, and then clicking Properties.

Install Access 97 or Office 97.

When prompted, click Change Directory to install Access 97 in a folder other than the folder in which Access 2000 is installed.

After the installation is finished, find the Msaccess.2k file and rename it back to Msaccess.exe

The method described by Uriel365 above worked for me.

A couple tips for after you have it installed:
The default version to launch seems always to be whatever version you were most recently using. Consequently, I put a shortbut to EACH on my desktop to simplify moving between them without having to go through all the layers on the start menu.

Also, all the icons will show in whichever version your are running at the moment , or have most recently run, regardless of which version the particular database runs in. To uncomplicate this situation (rather than get the error messages when I open the database), I put "97" on the end of all names of the databases that run on 97.

Hope that helps!

I have already followed what Uriel said to the letter and the result was what I described above...

Not sure what else to do other than reformat and try two operating systems!

you're sure you are installing in two diff folders? that should work. i have seen it a lot. even here at my company, they install the complete Off 2000 package, then install just ACC97 (to accomodate non-converted db's) into a separate folder.

I've installed into separate folders and even renamed the Access executable so that the Access 97 installation doesn't pick up another version....
