Accelar 1200 routing ipx 2

Hi..
I have an accelar 1200 with a couple of blades in it and 16 meg DRAM. The current software is at level 1.1.6. I understand that I need 32 meg Dram if I want to go to version 2.x.x. The DRAM upgrade kit is no longer available. This is problem number 1. Does anyone know what configuration that 72 pin SIMM is? Is it something special? Will the Switch Fabric recognize it or do I have to tell it that it has something larger in it? (IS there a written upgrade procedure?) Can this memory module "be got"?

The second qustion is..
Does the layer 3 software in v1.1.6 or v1.3.6 route IPX? At what software kevel can i do this? (Does it do IPX natively? I really have a hard time imagining that it cannot do IPX.)

The third question is..
If I just have it set up as a layer 2 switch with independent VLANS, will it switch the IPX packets correctly (as does every 350F that I own)?

I would sure hate to waste that routing power if I don't have to. (I understand that this is a great unit and I am not asking anything tricky out of it.)

I think we read the RAM we had and bought the next RAM SIMM size up in the same series on ebay, it worked fine

the Accelar is pickier about oversized packets than my 350 or 450s but other than that, just the same


1.3.6 is the last .1x.x series software, upgrade to 1.3.5 then 1.3.6, until you find the RAM

Two questions..
Please explain what you mean when you say you "read the RAM".
Also.. Will the switch recognize the new ram?
And do you know if the switch routes IPX at 1.3.6 level?

We read the numbers on the chips and I think on the SIMM card itself (this was over 3 years ago) and found the model of the SIMM (seems like it was a Samsung but I am not sure) there was another model with all the same letters but the numbers were twice as large

no idea if it does IPX at 1.3.6 I was just letting you know were to find the latest code that does not need more RAM

I have found a stick of 32MB EDO and have installed it.
I will be moving up to 2.1.whatever. Are there any intermediate upgrade stages I should hit? (I will be reconfiguing the unit form scratch)

I have another question if I may..

It appears that the blades are ARU1 (initial versions) and the ASIC in them is not right for routing the IPX that I so dearly crave and have been working to get. Do I need to set up a vlan by protocol and somehow add this to the other vlans? It is amazing how a solution breeds questions.

If you want to route IPX using ARU1s then you will need to install a stand alone router and connect it to each of your IPX vlans you want to route between. Yes an IPX protocol based vlan (of the correct frame type) would do

If a single Accelar chassis has an ipx vlan created, what ports are included in this vlan? Does every port become a member? Or how does that work? The switch is carved up into 4 port based vlans for IP and those vlans will route IP. I guess I need to know the scope of "what have I created?" hen I create a protocol (IPX) vlan.

If you have a look at the ports using device manager, you will see that the ports are coloured green, yellow and red. If i remember correctly , all ports are 'yellow' which means potential members of the vlan. You can make ports always memebers (green) or never a member (red). It will work out if a packet should be placed in a potential vlan if the ipx number in the packet matches the ipx number configured on the vlan
