Hi
I have obtained and installed SQL Server 7 on windows 95.
Now what ?
All I want to do is examine, explore and generally get to grips with the sample database (northwind ?)
I can run Enterprise Manager, Client Network, Profiler all OK, but BOL doesn't give a step-by-step guide to starting up
the sample database. Does the server start all by itself ?
Do I need to set up stuff in ODBC ? is it ODBC 32 bit ?
Anyone got a few mins to point me in the right direction ?
TIA

Open Enterprise Manager,
Expand Microsoft SQL Servers,
Right Click on SQL Server Groups,
Click on New SQL Server Registration...,
Register the SQL Server that you just installed...
You will either need to use the SQL Server name or the IP address depending on if you have DNS set up.

Then you will be able to expand SQL Server Groups and see your databases.

Go to tools, and select Query Analyzer and from there you can do TSQL commands.

Let not forget what installs by default w/ SQL Server ... BOL (Books OnLine). May need to set a shortcut on your desktop to this! Has most everything one would want/need to know about SQL Server.

Thanks

Hi Guys,

The compressed file is 1.9MB so I hope it gets there...
I've renamed it to a .doc to enable it to get out of our firewall.
Rename back to .zip and extract.

Jay,

Good comment, but in this case 'Dickie Bird' did use BOL:

"but BOL doesn't give a step-by-step guide to starting up
the sample database."

There's a whole pile of user-created FAQs for this forum (click the FAQs tab right up the top, beside keyword search).

While there doesn't seem to be one with 'I have just installed SQL Server. What now?', there's a couple pointing to SQL server books and online references.

Try faq183-3324, faq183-513, faq183-689 and faq183-694 for starters.

Good luck!

ps, rzs0502: since so many folks seem to want that file why not just upload to some webspace somewhere and post the link?

Posting code? Wrap it with code tags: [ignore]
Code:
[/ignore][code]CodeHere
[ignore][/code][/ignore].

If your getting an error with the books online then reinstall sqlserver 7.0.

It's not that hard to create a database. However, I would start with SQL2000, it is more user friendly than 7.0 also SQL2000 is fast over taking the older version.
